What we're working on

Wildlife Innovations currently provides services that range from San Diego to the San Francisco Bay area. Some of these services include providing predator surveys and management for federally listed species, including the Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus nivosus), California Least Tern (Sternula antillarum browni), Light-footed Ridgway’s Rail (Rallus longirostris levipes), Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia), and the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii). We provide injured wildlife rescue and support the Oiled Wildlife Care Network during oil or other contaminant spills. We provide services to active military installations, including Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base Point Loma, Naval Base San Diego, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, and Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos and are involved with the Department of Defense’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) program. Some of our work occurs on state lands, including the San Elijo Lagoon, Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, East Bay Regional Parks District, and the San Francisco Bay area. Our projects also occur on other federally administered properties in Mission Bay and in the Cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, and Foster City. Additionally, we assist airports with surveys, including Wildlife Hazard Assessments, and implement management of hazardous wildlife to reduce the chances for plane strikes and loss of life. We also provide environmental compliance support for construction projects (including for special status species). Please contact us for information about our additional projects.

At Naval Base Coronado (NBC), we provide predator surveillance and management for the state and federally listed California Least Tern and Western Snowy Plover.

We do this with proactive surveillance, using a system involving point counts, transect surveys, passive monitoring, and tracking; as well as reactive predation investigations, trapping, and highly specific lethal control. With this multi-prong approach, centered on sound biological and ecological science, we aim to maintain healthy predator populations while removing individuals who place inordinately high predation pressure on these listed species.

Avian species we monitor or manage for include American Crow, Common Raven, Gull-billed Tern, Peregrine Falcon, Red -tailed Hawk, Great Blue Heron, various Gull species, and more. Mammalian species we manage for include Virginia Opossum, Striped Skunk, Coyote, Feral Cat, and more.

San Elijo Lagoon is an important nesting site for state and federally listed Light-footed Ridgway’s Rail, and is being restored and managed for California Least Tern nesting as well. It is also an important stop-over site for numerous migratory species.

Our efforts here are focused primarily on remote surveillance using a network of trail cameras placed in key locations throughout the lagoon. We include targeted trapping for certain species when high predator abundance is documented by our remote monitoring systems. In doing this, we strive to maintain healthy predator populations within the ecosystem, while reducing undue predation pressure from these listed species’ nesting habitat.

In support of San Diego Navy Metro, including Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base San Diego, and Naval Base Point Loma, Wildlife Innovations investigates and provides wildlife rescue and transport. Our trained staff respond to injured wildlife reported by personnel on base.

We pride ourselves on rapid response time, arriving on site in less than 4 hours from when we are contacted. We locate and triage the reported animal, and staff determine if it needs medical care and if they can safely capture it. Staff capture the animal without causing further injury and prioritize methods that cause minimal stress to the animal.

Once secured, staff transport the injured animal to care facilities, with the sole purpose of treating and rehabilitating wildlife.
