Predation Risk Assessment

Could your site potentially benefit from a predator control program to enhance the survival success of your focal species?

We conduct predator surveys at proposed release sites to support the survival of listed species that have been rehabilitated or reared in captivity but are releasable. We assess the risk of predation to focal species and determine the ideal areas and times for release when predation risk would be lowest. By utilizing a variety of both digital and physical surveillance techniques, we are able to confidently estimate predator species richness and abundance and assess predator roles within each site.

We can help you determine if a predator management program is right for your project, design a program tailored to your sites and species, and answer questions regarding where, when, and how management efforts should be focused in order to maximize the effectiveness of our effort with the resources you have available.

Predator Management for Listed Species

Predation can be additive and detrimental to listed species when combined with other stressors, such as habitat loss, human disturbance, and environmental deficiencies associated with climate change. Studies show that predator control programs can increase species survival and reproductive success.

We specialize in the management of both native and non-native predators to help mitigate predation pressure on sensitive species, especially during critical times such as the breeding season. We conduct predator risk assessments to identify high-risk individuals and species, management options, and areas to focus efforts. We then design and implement management plans around our client’s land-use practices to meet listed species protection goals. We provide both part-time seasonal and full-time year-round services.

We Work Alongside...

...to Manage

At Wildlife Innovations, we believe a targeted predator management approach is essential to a successful program and a balanced ecosystem. Our biologists are skilled in the safe and discrete use of both lethal and non-lethal management techniques. We prioritize non-lethal techniques for native predator species whenever possible, and incorporate lethal control with high specificity only when necessary. We strive to develop and test innovative non-lethal management techniques, utilizing the latest technologies, to constantly improve our management programs.

Construction Monitoring and Environmental Compliance

excavators, construction machine, two-way excavator

Being environmentally compliant during ongoing construction efforts not only helps ensure that wildlife and natural resources are available for future generations to enjoy, but is also essential to protecting profits and limiting your company’s exposure to litigation and penalties. Let us help you promote both environmental sustainability and your company’s growth by providing the following services:

Wildlife strikes to aircraft threaten human safety, and the cost of repairs or grounding of equipment can be detrimental to efficient operations. Therefore, Wildlife Hazard Assessments (WHA) are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 14 CFR 139.337 certificated airports, and are encouraged for non-certificated airports, to help identify presence and patterns of hazardous wildlife, identify potential attractants for those species, and make recommendations to mitigate risks within each site.

We can conduct full WHA’s or less formal surveys to help quantify the risk of wildlife air strikes at your site and then design and implement the most appropriate wildlife hazard mitigation program to meet your needs. Whether you need part-time for full-time support, let us help you reduce the potential for injury and/or damage within your site.

Invasive Species Removal

We perform invasive species evaluations to determine the extent of the invasion, including abundance and establishment, damage to property and ecosystem, and long-term and downstream effects. Together, we’ll design and implement an invasive species control program to mitigate or eliminate target species.

Injured and Oiled Wildlife Response

Injured Wildlife Rescue—Our Biologists are trained in the safe capture, handling, and transport of sick and injured wildlife (including sensitive species) and provide emergency response services, within client properties, so that wildlife can be taken to licensed and permitted care facilities for rehabilitation.

Oiled Wildlife Response—Spills of hazardous materials (including oil, fuel, and other contaminants) can be detrimental to wildlife. UC Davis’s Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) is a world leader in oiled wildlife preparedness and response, and Wildlife Innovations is proud to be one of their member organizations that assist the network in the capture and recovery of wildlife contaminated by spills. We also specialize in the application of hazing and deterrence methods to reduce the number of wildlife negatively impacted by spills.

Who Can Hire Us?

What Do You Get?

Research Interests

At Wildlife Innovations, we believe that an adaptive and scientific approach is imperative for implementing efficient and effective management programs. We conduct research to further our understanding of predator-prey relationships and to enhance the overall quality of our management programs, reducing the need for lethal control whenever possible. We also welcome collaborative projects with researchers sharing similar interests which could be pursued through mutual grant-seeking efforts, unfunded collaborations, cooperative agreements, direct hire, or other opportunities. Our biologists are skilled in the capture, handling, marking, deterrence, and translocation of a variety of mammalian and avian species.
